Staying Active and Connected are Keys to Aging Well

November 20, 2017 by WPM Real Estate Management

Ample studies relating to isolation have shown that boredom and loneliness can wreak havoc on an older person’s health. Feelings of isolation can translate to increased blood pressure, a higher risk of dementia and can contribute to long-term illnesses in seniors. And even more troubling, perceived loneliness can actually increase a person’s mortality rate. Fortunately, both boredom and loneliness are preventable. Here are some suggestions.

Keep Your Brain Active

Keeping your brain sharp has been shown to be beneficial for keeping feelings of depression at bay. Consider auditing a college course, attending a seminar on a topic that interests you or signing up for a pottery class. These are all examples of ways to exercise your mind and also build social connections. Learning something new or enjoyable can also be greatly rewarding.

Get Some Exercise

Joining a group exercise program, whether you are wheelchair bound or able to move about unassisted, is beneficial for physical and cognitive function and can be a fun way to make friends and combat depression. At Lighthouse Senior Living we even offer exercise classes, which are great for increasing flexibility and mobility.

Don’t Eat Alone

Sharing a meal with others provides an opportunity to visit with or learn more about your dining companions, find common interests and even celebrate holidays and personal milestones. Communities like Lighthouse Senior Living offer a wide variety of healthy meal options and comfortable dining rooms to enjoy a delicious meal with friends and family.

Find Transportation

If you no longer drive, or feel tentative about driving at certain times of the day, look for other transportation options. Being able to get around as you like contributes to a sense of freedom and independence. If you don’t have ready to access to reliable public transportation, look for a community like Lighthouse Senior Living that offers transportation.

Get Involved

There are a number of ways to get involved with the local community, from volunteering at a local church or community group to teaching children how to play the piano. Getting involved can create a sense of purpose which can be very beneficial for elevating mood. Attending or even helping plan community events such as festivals, music concerts, or fundraisers can help build connections and promote a sense of excitement and fun.

See A Doctor

At any age, it’s important to establish and maintain a relationship with a good doctor. Having regular wellness check-ups as well as vision and hearing screenings can help identify and correct issues that could make life more isolating. For example, being fitted for hearing aids can make life more enjoyable for seniors suffering from hearing loss.

Find The Right Place

Joining a supportive senior living community may be your best defense in the fight against loneliness and boredom. The right community can offer opportunities to foster a fulfilling social life and provide a wide variety of engaging activities for body, mind and spirit. Lighthouse Senior Living has locations in both Columbia and Essex and offers amenities like in-house maid service, a salon and spa, weekly exercise classes, seminars, performances and regular outings for shopping and popular community events. Contact us to schedule a tour.
